They say it's the journey, not the destination. So here I am, staring at my bottom drawer, wondering how I'm gonna get my original songs - more than 30 of them - out of the closet.
About time, says an old friend. I have dallied for too many decades. A career, a family, a special child - they've put this dream on the back burner for far too long.
But if I don't document my songs, they will die with me. Suddenly, I'm at a point in life, thinking, what is my legacy for my child? How will he remember me when I'm gone? It is this - my lifetime of songs.
They've marked every step of my life since I was 14. They are inspired by the people I've met or known. They are my thoughts and struggle through the years. They are who I am.
And in the words of the Orange ad campaign, "I am who I am because of everyone."
I am clueless, really, a newbie. I have lots to learn from people who have been there, done that. I start from scratch now, a beginner.
I'm a little nervous, but I'm trusting in Steve Jobs' words:
"Because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart even when it leads you off the well-worn path and that would make all the difference."
I have been inspired by so many people in my life to write these songs. Now I'd like to share the inspiration.
It will take time, I don't know how long. But it's now or never. Wish me luck.
